OUTLINE: Rejoicing for two kings of different orientations and expectations.
CONTENT: Today is Palm Sunday, the day commemorated as the” triumphal entry into
Jerusalem”. It was the day when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey as people strewed
palm branches along the way. But, have you ever asked yourself, ‘If this was a triumphal entry,
then why did they crucify Jesus at the end of the week?’
This is a problem we need to address. If this was a glorious day for the people, then what went
wrong that by Friday He was arrested by High Priest’s, guards, accused by religious leaders,
tried by a Roman governor, and sentenced to death like a common criminal– – death by
There were two processions that day. Roman historians record that the governor of Judea,
Pontius Pilate led a cavalry into the city also. Each procession entering the city from different
ends, and the message they conveyed were very different. Pilate’s force was meant to send a
message to the Jews and those who might plot against the empire of Rome, and also to show
Power and might. Jesus’ entry was to show Humility, Zachariah 9:5, and bring deliverance,
justice, love and peace and remind them that God had not forgotten them, and will defend them,
Zechariah 9: 8-10.
When Jesus was brought before Pilate, the angry mob turned their chants in favor of Jesus
because they realized he did not come to save them from Roman oppression. They chose to
save Barabbas a noted criminal over Jesus. Those who watched that day, made a choice , to
either serve the god of this world of( might and power), or the King of a different kingdom of
peace and love; a contrast between Kings and kingdoms.
Two processions, two Theologies, two choices, which would you choose?
What kind of King do you expect?
