TEXT: 1Timothy 6:6
OUTLINE: Godliness with contentment is great gain.
CONTENT: In this world there are many rich but discontented people. Contentment is defined as “being satisfied with what one has”. Discontentment causes people to get into unwanted situations and problems. Paul writes to his converts from prison that he was contented with his situation, Philippians 4:11. Being godly needs something more than contentment. Saying “I wish—–“continuously is a sign of discontentment; wishes for great cars, homes, positions etc., things that you cannot afford or obtain. The Israelites grumbled about their conditions, and food when they left Egypt; they forgot their sufferings when they were in Egypt. People complain about everything; the rain, the sun, the snow, their bodies; they are always miserable. Let’s try to remember a few things: –
(1) Remember God created you; In His work of creation He looked and said all was good.
We are unique, fearfully and wonderfully made; Psalm 139: 14.
(2) You should be content with your circumstances. People go through stuff, but God is in our midst to see us through; Hebrews 13:5. We are children of God. Sometimes trials are tests of our patience and faith. Contentment comes through a relationship with God.
(3) Be content with the people God put into your lives; no matter what short-comings they may have. Pray for them and love them still. Remember the story of Joseph and his family. Genesis 45. Accept and embrace. Above all things: Learn how to praise. Learn how to give thanks, 2 Thessalonians 5: 18. Learn how to rejoice, Philippians 4:4.
