TEXT: Genesis 39:20-23
OUTLINE: Joseph’s life; a slave rises to power.
CONTENT: Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob; his mother was Rachael. He was loved by Jacob more than his other sons which caused jealousy and dislike. His brothers felt he was arrogant and decided to get the rid of him and sold him to travelers who then sold him to Potiphar, a guard to Pharaoh, in Egypt. Joseph was well favored in many ways, and the Lord
was with him. Joseph’s personality and life story is the topic of our meditation. He matured and prospered. Christian growth is similar; the person you are today should be progressively better with time. There are different signs of maturity; as can be seen in Joseph:
(1) Excellence in effort: – Joseph had to make a choice to do his best in whatever he did, and the Lord made him a success; thus, Potiphar made him overseer of his house and all that was under his authority. His work ethics made him trust worthy. When you exhibit excellence in what you do, God will elevate you. Joseph did all with a willing mind.
(2) Your attitude determines your altitude: – Because of Joseph, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house, and in the field. Potiphar’s wife made advances on Joseph, and not having her way falsely accused Joseph and he was thrown in prison. However, he maintained a positive attitude. Negative people can pull you down.
(3) Joseph served despite of the situation: – In prison he came in contact with the Kings baker and butler who was put there because they angered the king. He became of service to them, Genesis 40:2-4.
(4) He remembered that God gets the glory: – When God gives you a gift use it to his glory. Joseph was able to interpret dreams, and interpreted, the baker, butler, and Pharaoh’s dreams, which saved Egypt from seven years of famine. Church, are you unwilling to give your best to the master? Do you need to be reminded to give him praise? Remember your reward comes from Him.
